Amorgos Island, Greece

Amorgos
Amorgos is distinguished among the other Cycladic Islands by its cliffy relief. This island is a choice of those who wishes to learn more about the Greek way of living instead of common lying on the beaches.
Amorgos Island, with the picturesque mountainous landscape, has an elongated form. The main road, linking the northeastern and southwestern parts of the island was built only in the 90s of the XX century. Heretofore to move from one part to another was only possible by the sea.
The first settlements in the island appeared already in the year 3300 B.C. The island was one of the most important centres of the Cycladic civilization, when there were existing the 3 polises: Minoa, Arkesini and Egiali. Under the Roman government the island became the exile site. Later it was invaded by the Venetians, succeeded by the Turkish. During the junta the political prisoners were banished to this Island.
The main city in the Island - Amorgos or Chora, erected on the slopes of a hill - is a wonderful sample of the Cycladic city of the white-stoned houses, with the Venetian Fortress of the XIII century towering above them, several windmills and 4 tens of churches and chapels. The majority of the Chora Churches are built in the typical for the Cycladic church architecture style of the pair temples, so called Churches-Twins.
We would recommend you to visit the Archaeological Museum with the interesting exhibitions from the whole island. In the northeastern part of Chora the monastery of the Blessed Virgin Panagia Hozoviotissa is crowning the cliff. This is one of the outstanding monuments of the Byzantium culture. The monastery was built in the year 1017 and restored in the year 1088. Do not miss Agios Fanurios, the smallest chapel in Greece, hardly housing 3 persons in it at once.
Katapola is a small and quiet port and typical vivid Greek town, consisting of 3 small villages. There are plenty of taverns, hotels and even some bars.
The main attraction of Katapola town is the church of the Blessed Virgin Panaghia Hecatontapyliani or Katapoliani, erected on the place of the ancient temple of Apollo. Here you can also find the remnants of the ancient town Minoa. Please, be attentive, you can enter the churches and chapel only in respectable clothes, with covered arms and legs, women in skirts.
Both males and females should enter without head-dresses, at the entry there are chlamyses hanging, which are to be put on. The inner rooms are not that big but the views that open from the windows are really great…..
Those, preferring to swim, can enjoy the rest on the local tidy sandy beaches. The water is transparent, you can even see the deep bottom.
The huge boulders with the square surface and the flat tops welcome to sunbathe. The sudden precipice to the depth is wonderful for divers.
On the mountain above the town the excavations of the ancient city are held (well, you can do nothing with it since the island like the whole Greece is the land of the ancient civilizations). Probably the excavations would be of no interest but the view from that place is wonderful!
The second in size but not less important port of the island is a picturesque town Egiali, famous with its wonderful sandy beaches. The town, resulting from joining 3 small villages, strikes with its whiteness. It is easier to reach this town from the sea as the road, connecting it with Katapola is almost impassable.
In the southern part of the Island, not far from the cognominal ancient town, there is another wonderfully vivid town Arkesini: absolutely white and sparkling with its cleanliness. In the nearest future the construction of the roadnet is expected to finish, thus all localities of the island will be connected.
The total number of the hotels and rooms for rent does not amaze with its multiplicity, but despite the limited range of service, the number of tourists, attracted by the wonderful beaches and specific charm of the Island, is constantly increasing.
Few know that the film "Le Grand Bleu" by Luc Besson has been shot exactly in this Island.

We will arrange for you an accoommmodation in the best Gryspos Hotel or Amorgos Studios

Amorgos Island can be accessed by ferry from Piraeus, Rafina, Cyclades and Dodecanese. In summer the swift boats are circulating between Piraeus, Rafina and Amorgos.
